14 December 2021: Report of the Scientific Working Group on By-Catch Is Now Available

The By-Catch Working Group of NAMMCO’s Scientific Committee met in October 2021 under the chairmanship of Kimberley Murray (USA). The meeting was attended by members of the Scientific Committee and invited experts Simon Northridge (UK) and Marjorie Lyssikatos (USA). 

The primary focus was to review the estimates of by-catch rates of seals in Icelandic and Norwegian gillnet fisheries and harbour porpoises in Norwegian gillnet fisheries. It also reviewed the results of the pinger experiments carried out in Norwegian and Icelandic gillnet fisheries (pingers are acoustic devices set on nets to alert harbour porpoises on the presence of the nets).
