Josephine is a marine scientist with a particular interest in the field of acoustics and behaviour of marine mammals and their interactions with human activities. As an avid surfer, she moved from her German home to Scotland to enjoy a closer proximity to the sea. This interest in nature also brought her to Norway and NAMMCO, where she arrived early this year.

She obtained her MSc in Marine Mammal Sciences from the Unviersity of St Andrews in Scotland, where she researched humpback whale song culture in the South Pacific. Previously, she studied for her BSc Hons at the University of Aberdeen in the field of Environmental Sciences. During these studies, she spent a semester at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) to learn more about the Arctic marine ecosystem and how to manage it.

Josephine has hands-on experience working for the Group of Research and Education (GREMM) in Quebec, where she researched beluga whales by adding to the photo ID catalogue, and supporting the photogrammetry research. She also worked as a naturalist and guide onboard small cruise ships in the Arctic and Antarctic.
