27 March 2023: 30th meeting of the Council
NAMMCO is proud to announce the upcoming 30th meeting of the Council, which will take place in Tromsø, Norway on 29-30 March 2023. The meeting will address the challenges and opportunities facing marine mammal conservation and management in the North Atlantic region, today and in the future.
The meeting will especially discuss two international projects: the MINTAG project and NASS24. The MINTAG project aims to develop satellite tags to be used on certain whales to get information on their movements and stock structure. The NASS2024 survey (a continuation of the 30-year series of North Atlantic cetacean sightings surveys) will consolidate information on abundance and trends in abundance of cetaceans in the North Atlantic. Both types of information are essential to the sound management of stocks in a rapidly changing environment.
The meeting will be attended by representatives from the member governments of the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and, Norway as well as observers from Canada, Japan, and the USA. Additionally, representatives from Makivik Corporation (Quebec) and several international organisations, including the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the World Conservation Trust (IWMC) will join the meeting.
