23 December 2024: New study on deep-diving cetaceans in the North Atlantic
A new article by Ramírez-Martínez and colleagues, titled “Distribution and habitat use of deep-diving cetaceans in the central and north-eastern North Atlantic”, has been published in the NAMMCO Scientific Publications series.
The study investigates how environmental changes over the last 30 years have influenced the distribution of sperm, long-finned pilot, and northern bottlenose whales. Using summer survey data and modelling techniques, the research identifies key environmental factors, such as sea surface temperature and bathymetry, that shape the habitat preferences of these deep-diving cetaceans.
The findings suggest that warming waters have expanded suitable habitat for these species, rather than causing significant range shifts, with high-use areas identified in deep waters like the Norwegian and Irminger Seas. This research enhances our understanding of how these species respond to environmental changes and supports conservation efforts.
