Seven pinniped (seal) species are permanent residents in the NAMMCO management area (NMA). Five species, the ringed, bearded, harp, and hooded seals and the walrus, live primarily on the sea ice, and are often called “ice seals.” Two species, the harbour and grey seals, live near the coast and are called “coastal seals.” Read about the biology, conservation status, management, and research related to these species in the NMA under each species site.

Six species of baleen whales and 10 species of toothed whales are common permanent residents in the NAMMCO management area (NMA). Read about the biology, conservation status, management, and research on these species in this NMA under each species site. A few other species are resident but rare or visitors. Here you will also find information about the most common of these species.
