8 January 2026: The Report of the Pilot Whale Working Group is now available!

The Report of the NAMMCO Working Group on Pilot Whales is now available! The Working Group, chaired by Philip Hammond, met in November 2025 to conduct a stock assessment of long-finned pilot whales. The assessment was conducted for the central and eastern North Atlantic, based on a comprehensive genomic analysis of samples from both sides of the Atlantic, tracking data from animals tagged in different countries, abundance estimates from the North Atlantic Sightings Survey (NASS) 2024 and previous years, detailed information on biological traits such as maturation rates, and long-term catch statistics. The Working Group was thus able to make recommendations regarding the sustainability of removals in the Faroe Islands and Greenland, as well as for further research and management needs for all four NAMMCO Parties.
