July 21, 2017: 25 years – People behind NAMMCO

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of NAMMCO, the North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission, with the signature of the Agreement on Cooperation in Research, Conservation and Management of Marine Mammals in the North Atlantic by the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and Norway in Nuuk, Greenland, on the 9th of April 1992. Over the past 25 years, NAMMCO has provided the forum for the regional management of human activities targeting marine mammals, both cetaceans and seals, to ensure their utilisation is both sustainable and responsible.

During this summer and autumn, NAMMCO will give the word to the people behind the Commission in 1992 and since – the individuals who at various stages of its development have helped to make it what it is, have worked to make it better and to those who will help face the challenges of the future to better conserve marine mammals.
