Catch database 

This marine mammal catch database is searchable and it is possible to filter the information by country, species or area. It is also possible to sort the different columns in ascending or descending order and to show up to 100 entries per page.

NAMMCO aims to ensure that this database is kept up to date with correct and validated catch data. Catch data are recorded following the calendar year, and countries report their catch numbers for a given year by 1st February the following year, i.e., animals caught in 2020 are reported in 2021.

Carry-over from previous years are included in the quota numbers, where applicable.

Reporting of validated catch data from Greenland differs due to the existence of two different national reporting systems. Reporting of catches of species under quota (bowhead, fin, humpback, common minke whales, beluga, narwhal, walrus) follow the calendar year and the reporting is in line with that of the other member countries. The catches of non-quota species on the other hand are reported into a system (Piniarneq) that runs from October to September. The result is a delay of reporting of catch data for up to 2 years. i.e., catches of seals in October 2020 are reported to the database in February 2022.

The reported catch data for harbour seals in Greenland prior to 2012 is not included in the database due to known sources of error. This includes identified errors in where harbour seal catch data has been entered in hunting reports, and cases of species misidentification.
