16 May 2019: The Norwegian whaling and sealing season

The Norwegian whaling season started 1st April, with 11 vessels signed on. This year’s quota totals 1,278 individuals, the same as last year.

Bad weather conditions has limited the hunt thus far, and early in May, less than 30 whales had been caught.

Three vessels are participating in the harp seal hunt in the West Ice this year. One has already returned, marking the start of the end of this year’s season, which lasts until 30th June. The quota for the West Ice is set to 26,000 individuals.
