27 NOVEMBER 2025: New publication reviews grey seal hunting and population data between 2001 and 2024.

NAMMCO Scientific Publications has released a new paper titled “The Reintroduction of Grey Seal Hunting in Sweden – A Review of Hunting and Seal Population Data (2001–2024)” by Karl Lundström, Anja M. Carlsson, Malin Karlsson, Monica Mion, Pia Eriksson, and Markus P. Ahola. The study provides a comprehensive review of the reintroduction and transformation of grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) hunting in Sweden over two decades, examining hunting practices, quota systems, retrieval rates, and population trends alongside implications for management and ecosystem dynamics.

The authors emphasise that although grey seal hunting has been widely implemented to reduce conflicts between grey seals and coastal fisheries, its demographic and ecological consequences remain uncertain. The authors call for improved data collection, ecological modelling, and continued monitoring to support sustainable management.
